Garrick Johnson

Garrick Johnson is a Safety and Health Consultant with the USF SafetyFlorida Consultation Program. Garrick is our newest consultant, joining the team in 2016. Garrick completed a Master’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene from the University of South Florida in 2014. His coursework included occupational safety, industrial ventilation, industrial and occupational toxicology, physical and chemical agents, ergonomics, exposure assessment and control, occupational health law, and aerosol technology. Garrick’s research was focused on exposures to phthalate esters present in PVC film used as a vapor barrier in commercial warehousing facilities.

Concurrent with pursuing his graduate studies, Garrick spent 20 years in the environmental laboratory field starting first as an organic extractions technician at a laboratory in Jacksonville and working his way up to the position of laboratory director at his most recent place of employment in Lakeland. In the summer of 2009, the laboratory Garrick was working for became involved in the analysis of air and bulk samples related to the use of corrosive imported drywall (aka Chinese drywall) in new home construction throughout the southeast. Through this work, Garrick was inspired to return to school for his Master’s degree and pursue a career in Industrial Hygiene where he could augment his previous experience with new skills in order to help employers keep their workers safe and healthy. Garrick has experience with high pressure liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and colorimetric analytical techniques. Garrick brings to the Program a level of knowledge in industrial hygiene and laboratory science. His most recent training includes extensive coursework related to OSHA safety standards, safety and health management systems, and training on the new OSHA silica standard.
