They are proud to belong to an industry that provides thousands of jobs, diverts tons of materials from landfills, and makes a positive impact on the U.S. balance of trade and resource sustainability. Main Metal Recycling produces new materials from scrap using 95% less energy than producing the same product from natural resources. Additionally, the company specializes in buying and recycling ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal and computer electronics scrap from manufacturers, contractors and the general public.

Main Metal Recycling learned about the SHARP program when their Plant Manager, Micah Thornton, attended a Florida Recycler’s Association meeting in June 2010.

The company’s desire is to improve their safety and health culture among employees and customers alike, lead them to contact USF SafetyFlorida Consultation Program. By doing so, Main Metal Recycling has increased their safety meetings from monthly to weekly, began offering a better variety of personal protective equipment, and began including employees more in the process of making decisions about improvements, training and everyday best practices.

“For us, an increase in employee involvement is the most important result of being involved in this program. We have only had one injuries/illnesses in the past 6 years. Our property insurance agent understands the value of an excellent safety program and is impressed by our SHARP designation,” said Micah Thornton, Main Metal Recycling Plant Manager.”

The company works diligently to ensure that their employees go home to their family each night in one piece, ready to come back to work with the team the next day. Main Metal Recycling believes in giving their employees more opportunities to be involved in creating and maintaining safety programs.
