Safety Ownership Earns BAE Systems a SHARP Renewal

BAE Systems is a global defense, security and aerospace company with customers in more than 100 countries. Its Crestview Metal Fabrication Division employs 40 workers whose work requires them to use large devices that can be extremely dangerous--metal sheers and CNCs, to name a few. "When it comes to safety, diligence is required since our equipment can remove limbs without as much as a hiccup," says Senior Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator Dawn Rodriguez. She adds that she's tremendously proud of their employees and the ownership they take of their safety as well of their co-workers.

The Crestview division's SHARP renewal is its second within a five-year period. "Our safety record is a source of pride here and gives the company serious bragging rights," says Rodriguez. "Our SHARP flag flies proudly in the front of our building and is one of the first things a person sees when they come to visit our facility. Even before entering our building, a person is assured that this company and its employees are serious about safety."

So serious that management and employees take a proactive approach to safety. Its safety culture includes management safety checks, training, awareness through communications and posters, and assigned teamwork to ensure safety is always top-of-mind. Rodriguez says she is passionate about keeping her people safe and healthy. "Caring for their physical and emotional well being is very personal to me."
