BAE Systems is a global defense, security and aerospace company with customers in more than 100 countries. Its Crestview Metal Fabrication Division employs 40 workers whose work requires them to use large devices that can be extremely dangerous--metal sheers and CNCs, to name a few. "When it comes to safety, diligence is required since our equipment can remove limbs without as much as a hiccup," says Senior Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator Dawn Rodriguez. She adds that she's tremendously proud of their employees and the ownership they take of their safety as well of their co-workers.

When a safety and health management system succeeds for a company at one of its worksites, it is not uncommon for it to be rolled out company-wide. Gate Precast Company experienced this with its Jacksonville plant, embracing a more robust safety and health culture that earned it a SHARP award in 2009. Today, three other plants are SHARP certified: a Tennessee precast facility that earned its SHARP in 2010, in addition to a precast plant in Winchester, Kentucky, and another in Kissimmee, Florida, that received their SHARPs in April 2011.

In February, the Johnson Controls Central America & Caribbean headquarters office, located in Medley, renewed its OSHA SHARP status for its exemplary safety and health management programs. The site, which includes office space and a 28,000-square foot warehouse and storage facility, receives and ships HVAC parts and products to Latin America ranging in weight from 1 pound to 40 tons.
