Safety is a State of Mind at Sypris Electronics

Safety success does not happen overnight. And Tampa-based Sypris Electronics understands this very well. A leading provider of electronics manufacturing and engineering services for government agencies, including the U.S. Department of Defense, as well as the avionics and aerospace community, Sypris Electronics underwent years of dedication and effort to create a "world-class" safety program.

From top management down, the company is committed to safety by integrating it into all management systems, the same approach it takes for quality, productivity and delivery.

World class safety performance and continuous improvements to its safety program have always been paramount. Sypris considers the SHARP program an integral component for its environmental health and safety goals. A safe work environment along with a zero illness and injury worksite is an overarching goal for the company and its 300 employees, and safety performance is part of every employee's annual performance appraisal.

Sypris Electronics' safety committee meets monthly to discuss safety issues and review employee-submitted safety suggestions. The company rewards employees who submit accepted safety recommendations and also hosts luncheons to celebrate success efforts.

At Sypris, safety success is driven by a state of mind versus rewards or comp time. Every employee understands that potential revenue lost to injuries and lost work time affects the company's overall financial performance, which represents the livelihood of approximately 300 employees. In 2009, the company had a 0.0 DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) rate, well below their industry's average of 1.2.
