Aluma Tower Company, Inc., a manufacturer of portable, lightweight aluminum towers and mobile command centers, may be located in Vero Beach, however, its products span the entire globe. Since 1974, their towers have been found on mountain tops and in hurricane relief areas. They have been used for many different applications, from disaster recovery and data collection, to military communications and meteorological uses.

The company’s employees take their responsibility seriously to manufacture high-quality products. “Our products are used by the military and government municipalities to rapidly establish communications,” says Craig Davis, Aluma Tower’s assistant general manager. “In one instance we were informed by a customer that our products help save lives,” adds Davis. “We are honored to receive compliments of this magnitude and proud to play a small role in aiding our military and country.”

Aluma’s responsibility to safety is no different either. Their small size—20 employees total--works to its advantage so that employees look after one another. “We’re a close-knit family. We spend a lot of time over the course of a day with each other,” says Davis. In addition to monthly toolbox talks to ensure safety is at the forefront of everyone’s minds, the company conducts weekly safety inspections so that machines are working properly and has an open door policy so employees can speak freely about safety issues. “Employees will come forward with personal protective equipment ideas, such as gloves or safety glasses, and we provide them. We want employees to wear what they’ll feel most comfortable in.”

Earning a SHARP renewal is a significant accomplishment for Aluma Tower and it celebrated with a company party. “SHARP means to us the recognition and affirmation of Aluma management’s commitment and dedication towards maintaining a safe work environment for all employees. “ And a safe work environment it is. Last year, the company’s Total Recordable Case Rate (TRC) was 5.1, well below their industry’s average of 10.0

Davis says earning a SHARP recognition can be a competitive advantage for a business. “In our industry, having a quality control program is highly valued and, in many cases, required in order to be awarded a contract. I personally feel achieving the SHARP award has directly enhanced our quality control program.”
